Cycling in Swansea Bay

Cycling in Swansea Bay

Dylan Thomas, who was born in Swansea, described the city as an 'ugly, lovely town'. In the aftermath of the Second World War, much of it was rebuilt after it suffered heavy bombing. It is the largest city in Wales after Cardiff.

From a long list of tourist attractions and activities in Swansea, Cycling is one of those. If you are planning to visit Swansea, you must try cycling on the picturesque and interesting paths. It has some famous routes in the region which you won’t like to miss.

It is a good idea to grab a bike when you are in the city. Several cycle routes are available in Swansea Bay that are free from traffic and are part of the Celtic Trail and National Cycle Network. Ride along the Prom for a leisurely ride, or head for the hills if you're an adrenaline junkie! In the Vale of Neath, Afan Forest Park is a world-famous mountain biking destination. There are trails for all skill levels, be it a beginner or an advanced cyclist. Families and newbies can go on the green trails. It's still a challenge, but you're more likely to be amazed at the views than by the ride itself. You can also ride the Off-Road Gower Cycle Network.

The 5-mile Promenade of Swansea Bay is perfect for cycling. Take a ride from the city centre to Mumbles, and while you are there, grab some ice cream. It's said to be one of the best ice cream spots in the world. Pedalling along the bay is a great way to spend a summer day, as many cafes along the way offer wonderful views of the sea!

You can cycle on some of the quieter roads along the North Gower cycle route. Explore the stunning sights of the route (it is a suggestion to use a camera). The Tawe Tour is ideal for pleasant, traffic-free cycling. This cycling route is around 6 miles long, making it perfect for families. You should try Beside the Seaside route if you are looking for a beachfront ride. Upon arriving in Mumbles, you can take a dip in the water to cool off or grab some good food. It's not a difficult route to take, but it's a ten-mile round trip. However, it's well worth the effort.

Adrenaline junkies, get ready! Take on the twisty, rocky, and wildly exposed routes of Afan Forest Park. Mountain Bike Rider magazine voted this place among the World's 'Top 10 Places to Ride'. Be sure to check out these trails! Afan Forest Park provides challenging 100km single-track descents, intense climbs, and breathtaking views of the South Wales Valleys. All the equipment you'll need can be hired at the visitor centre, so no excuses!

Explore Gower in a whole new way with the Off-Road Gower Cycle Network! Enjoy the fresh air, and work out while checking out the coast and countryside of the UK's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty! The Gower offers 27 kilometres of paths, mostly following ancient bridleways. You may choose to tackle one or all three Gower hills; Rhossili Downs, Hardings Down and Llanmadoc Hill. You'll find mostly bare earth tracks and metalled, uneven surfaces. The conditions will vary depending on the season and the weather, so make sure to bring the right bicycle, equipment, and clothing. It is a shared network, and cyclists may come across walkers and horse riders - cyclists are required by law to give way to walkers and horse riders on the network. It's a good thing there's enough Gower for everyone!
