Stargazing In Gower

Stargazing In Gower

It is said that Wales has some of the best skies in the country for stargazers over Gower. There are no modern intrusions or urban life disturbances on the secluded beaches or rural commons, so you can admire the universe while listening to the waves crashing in the distance.

It is best to go stargazing around a new moon since there is less moonlight. The lesser the light the more stars can be spotted in the sky.  The tides are very high and very low during new moons (called spring tides), so try to visit during a low tide if possible. Don’t forget to take a look at the sea when you are at places like Caswell, Three Cliffs, and Port Eynon. Here when the summer evenings are warm, you can see bioluminescent plankton glowing in the dark.

Places To Enjoy Dark Skies:

The Gower Peninsula is just a whisper away from Swansea, but a galaxy away from it in a sense of spirit and dark sky potential. Some of Wales' starriest skies can be found on the Gower Peninsula. It is surprising to discover how beautiful the coast's dunes, cliff-rimmed coves, and waves-lashed sands are at night.

Port Eynon- It is known for its dark skies. The large beach faces miles of the Bristol Channel and is encircled by a curved bay. It's easy to access and a great place to enjoy the sunset. With patience and good timing, you can see meteors and the Milky Way at Port Eynon.

Three Cliffs- In Three Cliffs, you'll find a dark spot that's a little harder to access and tricky to access during high tide. Take caution here; the tide can block some routes.

Oxywich- It may not be as secluded as some of the other areas, but it is easily accessible with plenty of space and amenities nearby.

From Rhossili and Cefn Bryn, you can see beautiful views in all directions. The views at Rhossili are breathtaking, but stay away from the risky cliff edges and ensure your path has enough light if you're going to the beach.

Things To Take With You:

A torch is a must-have to visit all the above places. Prefer a head torch, it will keep your hands free.

It is not recommended to walk on uneven or wet ground without appropriate footwear. Make sure you take warm clothing, such as hats, socks, coats, gloves, sweaters, scarves, etc. Don't forget to layer, you can always take it off, but you can't add it.

It's great if you have special equipment, but you'll be surprised at how much you can see with just a pair of binoculars and how high-quality your smartphone photos are. Remember to bring a chair and a hot drink.

Keep yourself safe and secure!

Before going, check the timings of tides in advance. Some beaches are difficult to reach and some are not. Even in broad daylight, coastal paths can be dangerous, so when it comes to walking at night, be extra sure you know your route and can see where you are!
